Mad mission for me

So here I am reeling from our 3rd life interrupting sickness in as many months. I knew coming into 2014 that this year would be the year of self-care. I know I have neglected me. Its gotten to the point where feeling stressed out and in crisis is my normal feeling. That’s not good. It’s not right and it’s not helpful. Of course guess what it makes me sick. There is a shocker right. So time to take a step back and evaluate.

so now I’m on a mad mission to take care of me and I am starting with the food. It seems when I get buys that my ability to eat good food disintegrates. Take today. We (Little and I) were morning people today. Which means she has school in the morning and I have work in the morning. So I woke up helped her get dressed feed her, took the dog out, feed the dog etc etc. You know the life of a mom. What ended up happening is that I walked out the door without having eaten. fast forward its 1pm I still have not eaten and I am leaving the office to go pick up Little. Who announces that she is hungry and thirsty. I do have some snacks in the car and so I get a few handfuls of trail mix. We rush home. I take the dog out. Get little situated with a snack and some water and then off we go again on more errands. During said errands I make a bad food choice in the form of a lot of sugar and even though I feel better at the moment I know I will pay for it later. I guess it convinced me and I got to thinking of what I was reading last night. A very inspiring post on eating clean and doing a sunday prep. It got me thinking of doing a food prep day or days. I got to thinking of the different foods that would work for me and my family and the first two are what I’m sharing with you in this post.

I am slightly embarrassed by the first one. I joined in the salad in jar craze. I don’t know. I hope it works. It does seem like something I can grab and be able to have lunch at work. It also seems like a nice pre made lunch I can have at home when I am in the middle of life.

20140124-181256.jpg

I also made 12 smoothie packs. I was inspired by this blog and modified the recipe based on the fruit I already had in the freezer. I plan to make some with her recipe because they sound good. It didn’t take that much time to put them all together which is nice and I am sure doing them all in a big batch like that actually would save time as opposed to doing them individually each morning. Whats more the work is done which frankly is needed in my crazy mornings. One last benefit is that no more greens melting before I get to them! I do hate to waste food. Win win win!
20140124-181318.jpg

now I’m working on list of foods that I might make every week during food prep day. Do you have any foods you make every week? do you have foods you wish you made every week?

Masterpiece Monday Cake

I am now 34. I had a lovely birthday filled with lovely people. I got to play in my garden and made a significant dent in the garage.e Which is slowing becoming our play room/ craft room/ laundry room. I also made myself a cake. I scored Pinterest for a recipe and then tried and tried to make it. Of course I had to modify a cake so it would be gluten-free. I also enlisted the help of a friend, fellow mommy and all around amazing woman to teach me how to make frosting and frost a cake.

image
This is the second batch of caramel I made. It ended up crystallizing but hey it still tasted ok.

image
This is my first and second batch of caramel you can see the first one was way to light.

image
Here is me with my cake in my friends kitchen. She is an amazing teacher and has more tools than I had any clue you would need to frost a cake. We started with a measuring tape to get the layers even and all kinds of knives and spatulas.

image
and finally right before we ate it I put a rose on it from my neighbors rose-bush. It took a lot of time and a lot of trial and error and a lot of effort, and what better gift can I give myself.
you can find
The cake recipe here
The caramel sauce recipe here
and a swiss buttercream frosting here.

and that my friends is this weeks master piece.

This is a smoothie how to and since it is pretty much the same as mine I thought I would share it. Plus I just love how happy and upbeat Kandee is. So Good morning and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Of course while your blending this all up use your witchy self to put good intention in. Think of you healthy and strong and feeling great.

checking in

wpid-IMAG2454.jpg

It’s a good time to journal, and so I am going to barrow from one of my favorite blogs Abide With Me. Every now and then she does a journaling post with lots of headings as prompts. I am changing them a little and borrowing a little from others.

Drink of the Day (From Thalassa)
Irish Breakfast Tea

Sowing/ Harvesting:  Sowing the seeds to making my dreams real. Harvesting some dream work and some hard work put in after wards to create my workbook.

In the Garden:  we are really hopping now. I have the baby sprouts of corn coming up and we have put in water melons, sunflowers, a ton of wildflowers, tomatoes, and basil. I have a volunteer cucumber (no idea how I got that!) a ton of butternut squash starts that need to be moved and shared. AND still 2 empty beds to plant. I’m trying the square foot garden method and I am really liking it. I have a slew of plants that I still want to put in too. Oh and I found the most beautiful rose blooming in my garden this morning! It is from my neighbor’s yard and it is stunning. I will get a picture.

Creating:.Various books and kits 🙂 more on that later.

Looking: The birds in my yard. I am engaged in this silly life and death battle going on. It is silly that I’m involved not that silly that it is going on. The house finches and mocking birds make their nest in our row of 14 cypress tress. The babies are hatched and featherless little things squeaking for food. The Crows come by for an easy meal. Last year around this time he carried one off and Little was so sad. So now I’m going out side 5 times a day to shoo the crow away and explain that after the babies are bigger and no longer food I will leave him some food. He just looks at me to see if I’m  seriously getting in the way of his meal.

Listening: The blasted TV which seems to be always on. The birds mocking birds and mourning doves and quail and blue jays and house finches. I don’t know them all.

Smiling: I sold my first workbook. I created something that someone else liked enough to buy. Its kind of a rush

Reading:  A book on square foot gardening and then anything else on my nightstand. trying to get back on track of my blogs. I’m WEEKS behind!

Outing: Does going to the office count?  Things are going better there though. I took Little to a swim class. The second one went better than the first. The first she didn’t want class to be over and jumped back into the pool and ran to a place that was too deep for her.

Thinking: I miss my blog and reading blogs. I wonder if I can sneak away and watch 2 episodes of Rachel Zoe and 20 of Dr Who?

Cooking: We made some yummy ribs the other day and a yummy frittata with goat cheese.  When I plan my week I cook better and eat better when I don’t plan I end up uninspired.  I really want soup

Feeling: hormonal. TMI? I have seriously cried a lot over the last week some happy some sad but quick to tears is ANNOYING!

Wishing:  for someone to cook me soup and bring me hot chocolate with whipped cream while I read and or watch the above shows. I need some “off” time.

C is for Chocolate Chip Cookie of Compassion (spell)

I have always been a witch, in a religious and spiritual way as well as a practical daily way. That said there are still great religious leaders of other faiths that I have enjoyed learning from. The Dalai Lama is one. I find him brilliant though I do not practice Buddhism, And though I do not practice Christianity I do enjoy some of their leaders. One such person is Joyce Meyer. I like her spunk and I like that she talks about doing the right thing and taking personal responsibility for yourself. You may be wondering what on earth that has to do with cookies. Years ago I listened to a CD of hers and she had a line that stuck me. Basically if it was something like if your feeling bad for yourself  go make cookies and bring them to someone else. This gets you doing something and thinking about something else.  So this spell is based on that line

Sometimes we get very caught up in our own world of needs, and wants, and responsibilities. Sometimes this makes us short with the ones we care about. Sometimes we get in to the silly argument of my life is harder than yours. This is as I said, just silly. We all have our mountains to climb. We all have our obstacles.  So have a little love for others that are going through it too. Have some compassion and show it with this cookie.

This recipe is based on my college roommates recipe but you can use any chocolate chip cookie recipe you like. For that matter if they don’t like chocolate chip then you can make them another type of cookie.

Preheat the oven to 350
mix in a bowl
1 cup almond butter or peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg and as many chocolate chips as you like
put on a cookie sheet with parchment paper rows of tablespoon amount cookies. Then bake for 10 min.

Now being a kitchen witch I am always “playing” with my food. I visualize and pour in energy. So while your mixing maybe you can add in the spice of love or better health or overcoming obstacles. I am assuming you know a little something about what this person is going through and so you can add that appropriate intention.

When the cookies are all done. Pack them up and bring them to your friend. Maybe even sit down to some cookies and tea and make a point to just listen to their needs. Or invite them to your house and do the same. Since you know me and how I feel about spells for or on other people. I suggest you say something like “by the way these are extra special cookies I made just for you and I put the intention in that…….” You can reword it depending on how much that person believes in magic or if prayer is better to say or what have you.

Again I can’t take full credit for this spell because it all happened one night on The Pagan Mama when we were brain storming C words.  Also one night when Little was 2 ish I posted on my facebook page that I wanted to run away (if you’re a mom you get this) Hubby was home, baby was asleep. A dear friend wrote back and said her baby was asleep why don’t I come over for some fresh-baked cookies.  It was just what I needed and made me feel worlds better.

Food
As this is an appropriate day for Dairy here is my idea of lunch 🙂

Source: cooking.lovetoknow.com via Geri on Pinterest

Yummy Milk shake now depending on how you lunch you can add either whisky or coffee. I wont tell 😉 Recipe here. Which would go very nicely with this grilled cheese.

Source: cookingstoned.tv via Arwen on Pinterest

Find the recipe here. To round out lunch how about a nice soup.

Source: blog.seasonwithspice.com via Poppy on Pinterest

find that recipe here.

Decorations
I wish I lived where it was cold I would be making these!

Source: entertainexchange.blogspot.com via Poppy on Pinterest

or have Little do this 🙂

Source: i.imgur.com via Alysen on Pinterest

which counts as decorations and an activity. But we don’t so we will do one of our tried and true activities of making butter.
wpid-IMAG0274.jpg
which happens to be super easy. This picture is from last Imbolc when Little was 2 and she made it all herself!

Poppy’s Pagan Planning Imbolc

Source: acbalsmoon.blogspot.ch via Poppy on Pinterest

ah Sunday. Time for another session of Poppy’s Pagan Planning.

Menu:
I had mentioned in my last Poppy’s Pagan Planning post that I thought I would make Quiche and salad. I like Quiche not just because of the egg and dairy seem very in tune with Imbolc, but also the roundness of it reminds me of the wheel of the year. So other than salad other round things like rolls or a round Irish Soda bread

Source: simplyrecipes.com via Poppy on Pinterest

And of course I did say salad. how about I a nice spinach salad with poppy seed dressing?

Source: ahintofhoney.com via Poppy on Pinterest

Activities
of course it is traditional to make a Brigid’s Cross as it is Her day.

Source: earthwitchery.com via Poppy on Pinterest

You may also want to work on some poetry to be read at your circle or Altar. Perhaps even a chant to say over you cross as yo make it. This is also a good time to have a bardic circle (or party) Invite folks over to sing a song or recite a poem or story. You can do this with kids too and have them make up little songs. Even do this around the dinner table. lots of fun and if you don’t want to make up a new song or poem you can learn and recite a traditional story.
Another activity to do with kids or the young at heart.

Source: spoonful.com via Poppy on Pinterest

and you can find the full instructions and list of what you need here.

Decorations
For those of you with out a fireplace but wanting a hearth I love this

Source: blueroofcabin.com via Poppy on Pinterest

and these are beautiful to me. If I lived where there was snow (which clearly I don’t) I would put the twigs in the vases and then put the snow in around and on top of them and then a floating candle on the top. Watch the snow melt as the candle burns.

Source: thefamilyceoblog.com via Poppy on Pinterest

of course I don’t live where it snows so I will be making something like this

Source: annabooshouse.blogspot.com via Mackenzie on Pinterest

From Annaboo’s house because the lace gives me the feeling of snow.

I hope this gave you some good ideas to print out and keep in your Book of Days.
