offended

I feel like my mini morning rant caught some off guard. I feel like some explanation might help.

First thing my that got my knickers in a twist so to speak was that my friend Velody of Treegold & Beegold was ripped off. Not in a opps accentual way either. She makes really cute stuff for her Etsy store and a Facebook page outright stole it from her. Lifted her photo off her site and posted it has their own! So so so Wrong! Velody does a lot for the pagan community  She posts a lot of tutorials for kid crafts and gives of her time and creativity to us as a community.  So if you are friends with Confessions of a Crafty Witch on Facebook maybe you can drop them a line about ethics.

The second thing that got me going is from Pinterest. Several times I have found things I liked and gone back to try to find it again only to follow a link that is just a picture or a round-up. some times other places are cited and sometimes they are not. Some times there is a link back to the original. Or you follow the link to find the exact same recipe as the one posted as modified word for word except 3/4 cup a sugar instead of 1 cup.

The third is back to Facebook/ blogs that post full rituals, recipes  almost full chapters, from books I have read and then don’t credit the author. This makes me question if anything on their site is original content. Also if I like said ritual, recipe, chapter I might want to find out more about the person who created it and find out if they have other things I like to read.

so that is what I was ranting about

I support your rant, all valid points!!

  2. Your rant is valid Poppy. Something I’ve written about before is non-existence of an original thought and my brother-in-law gave me a great example. He likes to compose songs and music to play on his electric guitar and quite often he’ll be playing a really cool song he came up with and quickly realize he’d heard it before! A group or musician he likes had already come up with the riff. The collective conscious just seems to rotate the same stuff from one person to another in a continuous spiral. That’s why there are so many reboots of old movies, fan-fic from shows and books, fashion…they just can’t come up with anything new. Sure people tweak things and alter them a bit but it’s all been thought of and done before. As you think of something, it’s being created, thought about or acted on by someone else. In many cases, as you’ve illustrated in your rant…hijacked. Is it really a hijacking? Is the person who was hijacked really just a unwitting hijacker themselves? I know I am in the things I make! Because of the length of our species existence….it’s ALL been done before. The Teslas and Einsteins are rare now. They were the pioneers of all future generations and now live on as muses. Their inventions being tweaked and slightly altered ever since but nothing completely original.

If I have something that I know is from somewhere else, I either quote it or link it…and if for some reason, it is something that I adapted or whatnot, I annotate that as well. And if its something I wrote down and forgot to note the author of, etc, I also explain that…

But sometimes…you just remember something that someone else did, but don’t remember that you saw it somewhere else. Like…how many different sources are there for that Oreo cookie Moon Phase activity for kids? Tons–and I think it was originally a science thing, and not even a Pagan one!

Its all about the attribution! Give credit where credit is due–people will thank you more for pointing them to something else interesting in the end!
