Samhain yearly rant.

Now that Little’s birthday celebrations have past (and boy were there a lot of them) I  am turning my face to the next celebrations on the horizon. First up Samhain/ Halloween  Dia de Los Muertos (day of the dead) week of celebrations.

I would like to start with my yearly rant about why these holidays are important. The very fact that they are so celebrated should speak a bit about the power of them. Not to mention that many churches go on hyper overdrive to have “harvest festivals”. This is a time to remember that Witches are very much real and have been a long part of our history. Our Fear of powerful women, and men, our greed of their knowledge can be seen far to often in history. Want some truly scary reads for this time of year? Read about the witch hunts. This holidays are important because they force us to varying degrees think about witches as people.

Next part of my rant is for the pagans (I am sure none of you) who do this whole “I walk the Old Path, Christianity stole all our holidays and everything traces back to the old Celtic holy days” sing song. This doesn’t usually get under my skin so much as I hear the following argument/ theory. which is some sort of version of Samhain is the real holiday we are celebrating every thing is based on it. oh really? what about Day of the Dead? Well Christianity  stole from us and have all souls day and when Spain conquered Mexico they brought that holiday which the natives adapted. Yeah nice theory though utterly wrong! The Natives already had an ancestor festival long before the conquistadors.

point to both is that this is a good time to look at some history and learn your stuff instead of mindlessly repeating things you have not taken the time to look up. And by they way when you dismiss my ancestors holiday, it is just as if someone told you your holiday was made up and not real. So how does that feel?

ok rant over!
