broken hearts and breast cancer awareness.

I haven’t wanted to write about this. Actually I NEVER wanted to write this. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly on the second day of this month I lost a dear friend of mine. She was 33. I am still not able talk about his or type about it without tears. Why write about something so personal and painful? because of the lessons she can teach us all.

My friend was a wonderful light. She was beautiful yes but it was the light that shined from her insides that made her beyond beautiful. She was funny and lively and loving. She was a good friend to those around her and an adventurous spirit. And she was a fighter.

She was 28 when she found the lump in her breast. Her husband confirmed that yes this is new and no you are not imagining it. She went to the doctor. The doctor said “oh your young, you have no family history, don’t worry about it.”  She fought her doctor. No she said I want this checked. I want a biopsy. They said oh no. your just being paranoid  Your young it is just firm tissue. She said I want a biopsy. They said fine, fine we will give you an ultra sound. Here take this slip to the hospital they will do the ultra sound there. She drove to the Hospital. And on her way she changed the slip. She took matters into her own hands. She handed the doctor at the hospital the slip for an ultra sound and a biopsy.

It was cancer. At 28 with no family history and no health issues she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Whats worse, it had already metastasised. She fought. she changed her diet . She got chemo. She never once gave up on life. She participated in Relay for Life and other charity events and lived her life as a survivor even as she fought. She inspired others and smiled and let her light shine and her laugh ring out.

There was pain on all fronts and of all levels. She fought and fought and fought for 4 1/2 years. She lost her battle but she LIVED really lived even as she was dying. For now she will live on in the hearts of everyone she knew. Hopefully she will be the voice that speaks up in our minds when our doctors tell us not to worry and we say no. this is my body and I know best.

“Once, I can’t remember, I was long ago, someone strange. I was innocent and wise, and full of pain. Now that I’m a woman, everything has changed. Once, when I was searching, somewhere out of reach, far away, in a place I could not find, or heart obey. Now that I’m a woman, everything is strange.” – Amalthea from The Last Unicorn.
