If you have reading my blog for a while you know my husband and I have very different views on religion. Clearly I am a practicing Witch and he is what I like to call an Atheist Christian. That is to say he was raised Christian (he calls it being bible thumped) and now thinks all religion is bad. That said, he knows an awful lot about Christianity and can pretty much quote the bible, so every now and then those old beliefs pop up.
Not only do we love each other madly we also respect each other and so there is room for all belief systems in our household. We have good ongoing discussions about it, especially with regards to Little and how to raise her. Somethings she is privy to and somethings she is not. Our Full Moon ritual is one thing we all do as a family.
I don’t know when I started it, but we always have breakfast for dinner on the full moon. It comes from a tradition from my dorm days in college, where one of the clubs put on a full moon fry bread event every full moon. Fry bread is yummy and delicious and part of the native culture where I attended school. Sugar however HATES me and so I needed something else, so I tweaked the idea and came up with breakfast. Mainly I thought well eggs and pancakes are round like the moon. Several months into it my hubby came home from work and said “ah it must be the full moon” after seeing what I was making for dinner. This made me exceedingly happy and the tradition stuck.
Tonight we are going to be having baked eggs with lemon and cheese pancakes. We are also adding to the tradition by adding candles, as you can see in my photo above. White candles are traditional for the full moon and what makes a meal more special than candle light? Back when I was reading “Simplicity Parenting” the author talks about having some time with candle light for children. I loved the idea but every day seemed like to much of a stretch for us. I have been mulling it over since and decided on holidays of any kind we would dine by the light of candles. I am also going to introduce the Full Moon Question tonight. “What are three things you are thankful for in the last month?”
So if you celebrate, what will you being doing tonight? Even if you don’t, what are three things you are thankful for in the last month?
