How to be a witch in the broom closet

There are many folks out there that think wow this sounds good and it sound like me but I live with someone who won’t approve. The question then is how to I do this with out their knowledge.

First and foremost you have to figure out if they will ever approve and if there is a way where you can tell them so that they do approve. Maybe they have preconceived ideas based on false information. Maybe they will be open to actual information and it can change their mind. Maybe they will decide that if it makes you happy they are ok with it. There is also the possibility (and this is not everyone) that really they are ok with it all and you just thought thy might not approve. They may be like my husband who doesn’t notice a lot of it, and doesn’t care one way or another. They of course might straight up, seriously and religiously disapprove.

In that case should you want to practice you need to find covert ways of doing it. I have mentioned this a few times.  First and foremost, being a Witch is more about your personal relationship with the God and Goddess. No one else is in your head or heart and cannot know what you think or feel.  Prayers can be done silently. You can read things or think them without saying them out loud so others know what you are doing. I talked about that a little when I was talking about Grace and silently adding words in your head if they are not able to be spoken. If a grace talks to Our Heavenly Father you can add in “and Mother” in your own head. Moments of silence can be good for that too. Everyone can then “say” what they feel moved to within their own head?

I also spoke a little about it when I talked about Altars. I love my husband and I am sure he knows that my Altar has something to do with my “witchy stuff” but he has not said anything to me about it. I am not even sure he noticed when I set it up. You don’t have to work with tools but if you do you can keep them tucked away in a special box or bag where others wont see them. As far as your book of shadows many many many people have journals that others respect as private so if you say it is a journal they may not care to know more (if they even notice in the first place) Candles are great this way for both worship and spells because everyone loves candles and others, not in the know, might just think they are pretty and smell nice. No need to tell them more.

I personally am not a Witch that feels the need to dress up in a Witch “costume” (flowing robes, lots of jewelry and so on) and walk around town. Some people do and that works for them, but for me and who I am, it would feel silly. Because of who I am a lot of my daily practice certainly does not seem to be anything out of the norm. I don’t feel the need for everyone to know everything I am about. Like I said though this is my personality and while I am free with my opinions and words I am a private person that is ok if not everyone knows everything about me. Because of my experience with this, I think that most people can practice without others noticing.

I will say at this point that it. helps to have real live witchy friends.  Like minded friends that you can “go out and hang out with” If they are in a freer environment you maybe able to have circles at their place. If not you can always go to a coffee shop or park and talk about things. The ladies that I do meet with are close friends and saying “hey I’m off to so n so’s house” does not raise red flags. You may even be able to keep items at their place.  Libraries are also great as they often have books on Wicca and you can read them there instead of brining them home

The final thought on someone who disapproves is if they love you and they see that over time you are becoming a happier and more thoughtful person, they may grow to just be really happy for you. One of my sister witch’s husband told her the whole idea scares him but she was able to talk about it with him and he might come to a circle and see what it is all about. This is progress and perhaps you will have that too.
