A brief intro to the God and Goddess

At the heart of Wicca are the God and Goddess. For as long as Humans have looked out on the world and felt that there was something larger then them there they have strived to name it. Some call it God some call it Goddess some call it the Universe or simply energy. As far as I am concerned there is no wrong or right name for the Divine.

When I first began to study and practice I thought that there was a universal Divine and we called it God and Goddess to better relate to it and understand it. I have had this come up with students to who love the idea of a Goddess but they are looking at it in just terms of psychology of humans, and not of spirituality. I still believe there is a universal Divine who we call God and Goddess but I don’t believe it just so we can relate or understand. The more I practiced and lived my life with the God and Goddess I found that they are indeed real and the energies while still part of the universal life force are different. The God has a masculine energy and the Goddess has a feminine energy. This does not make one better or worse or stronger or weaker.

My dear friend asked me “Where do the God and Goddess Come from and do they have names?” a Wonderful insightful question indeed. For the first part as I touched on before my belief is that the God and Goddess are the life force behind everything. So I guess they came from, and are made of energy. As far as there names go well there are thousands. Each culture has their own names. What you call them has a lot to do with how they speak to you. If you follow a more Celtic Tradition you might use Celtic names but there are Greek and Roman (probably the best known names) and Native American and Mayan and Hawaiian and Japanese and Chinese and Egyptian and so on and so forth. Some Just call them God and Goddess. The Goddess among other names is also referred to as the triple Goddess(maiden, mother and crone) or the Moon Goddess or Mother Earth. The God is sometimes called The Sun God and is sometimes referred to as the Horned God or Lord of the Beasts.

I suppose now is as good as time as any to talk about that other horned one. The one in Judeo-Christian tradition that is bad and negative and responsible for horrible things. He is not ours. We do not believe in such a creature or deity. While I agree there certainly is some bad juju out there and some negative energy I believe that it, like the concept of the devil is human made.

If you have time to meditate, a meditation on the life force and energy around you is quite wonderful. Sit and just be and you will be able to feel the God and Goddess with you, around you and in you. You may ask them what they would like you to call them. Speak to them and listen for they will answer you.

Bright Blessings
